Mindelo, a small old style pearl of West Africa, with its old center of very beautiful buildings in colonial style, is definitely the cleanest and vital city of the archipelago. The beautiful port city of Mindelo is in fact the city most vibrant and cosmopolitan of Cape Verde. It remained uninhabited until the nineteenth century and began to flourish thanks to its port built by the British in 1838 as a base for the supply of coal for their ships. The beach of Mindelo "Laginha" is very popular during the weekend, but it is "Baia das Gatas" the most beautiful, a real natural swimming pool of turquoise water.
